Singer-songwriter and bass player Andrew Duplantis performs live with Sean Eason and Jenny Smith at The Continental Club Gallery.
Andrew Duplantis plays The Continental Club Gallery on Wednesday, August 26, performing as the Andrew Duplantis Trio with Sean Eason and Jenny Smith. It's a singer-songwriter and bass player leading his own night, and the two names on the bill with him round out the trio.
If you've spent any time around the Austin scene over the last few decades, you've likely run into Duplantis without even realizing it. He's been a first-call sideman for around 30 years, the kind of player who gets called when a band needs a reliable bass line and a steady hand. That list of names reads like a cross-section of the city's guitar-driven side: Son Volt, The Meat Puppets, Jon Dee Graham, and Molecular Steve. He's spent a good part of his career playing other people's songs, but he's also fronted and written for his own projects along the way.
This is one of those nights where he steps out from the sideman role. The billing puts him front and center, and the trio format keeps the focus on the songs he writes. With Eason and Smith on board, it's a full band rather than a solo set, and the setlist will be his own material.
