AARC Exhibit Reception: Lao Textiles: Connecting Threads Through Time

The Asian American Resource Center is opening a new exhibit, Lao Textiles: Connecting Threads Through Time, with a reception on Saturday, August 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. The show is built around a private collection of Lao textiles gathered by Joanne Click, and the reception is where you'll get to hear the stories behind them. Click will give a history talk and a silk weaving demo, walking through the history of her pieces and the process of Lao silk weaving. There will also be light bites from Mama Noy's Kitchen, served first-come, first-served.

It's a good way to get a closer look at the collection and the craft. The textiles are the main feature, and the talk and demo let you see how they're made and where they come from. If you've ever wondered about the actual work that goes into silk weaving, this is a chance to see it in person rather than just reading about it.

For a bit of context, the Asian American Resource Center is a space for Asian American communities in Austin and beyond, and it does its work through community collaborations, organizing programs, and curating art and history exhibitions. It runs a Senior Program for residents aged 50 and over alongside youth and teen initiatives, and its Community Art Exhibit Program hangs work year-round that celebrates the cultural heritage and identity-making of AAPI artists. The center is open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The reception is free and open to the public at 8401 Cameron Road, Austin, TX 78754. Seating is limited, so you'll need to RSVP. It runs from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, August 8.
