A festive mystery play by Mark Shanahan that reimagines A Christmas Carol through the lens of Sherlock Holmes, featuring a haunted Holmes investigating the mysterious death of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Austin Playhouse brings A Sherlock Carol to its West Campus stage from November 13 through December 20, a festive mystery that puts Sherlock Holmes inside Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It's a regional premiere for the play, written by Mark Shanahan, and it runs through the heart of the holiday season.
The setup is a crossover of two Victorian classics. The story picks up after Holmes has defeated Moriarty; he's haunted and convinced his days of detecting are over, until a grown-up Tiny Tim draws him into the investigation of Ebenezer Scrooge's mysterious death. The company describes it as witty, suspenseful and heartwarming, with twists, laughter and holiday cheer. It premiered Off-Broadway at New World Stages in November 2021 under Shanahan's own direction, and if you've seen Austin Playhouse's previous Holmes productions, Peril in the Alps and Baskerville, this one is right in that same vein.
Lara Toner Haddock directs, with Brennan Patrick as Sherlock Holmes and Huck Huckaby as Ebenezer Scrooge. They're joined by an Austin Playhouse Artistic Company ensemble that includes Ben Wolfe, Bailey Ellis, Vivian Noble and Bernadette Nason.
