City Theatre Austin presents a high-energy musical reimagining of Shakespeare's romantic comedy, blending poetry with chart-topping anthems.
City Theatre Austin is bringing A Midsummer Night's Dream to the Genesis Creative Collective this summer, with the run opening on July 24 and continuing through August 9. It's not the straight Shakespeare you might be expecting: this version is a musical reimagining that mixes poetry with chart-topping anthems, turning the romantic comedy into a high-energy theatrical mash-up of backstage rivalries, onstage romances, and dreams set to full song. The production is rated for teens to adults.
Adam Adolfo is the one behind the adaptation, directing and adapting the play himself. He's a producer, stage director, choreographer, and designer who has staged Shakespeare, musicals, opera, and world-premiere plays across the country, and he was nominated for Outstanding Director of a Play in the 2026 Austin Theatre Critics Awards. The show follows in the footsteps of the 1996 Broadway revival, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Play.
