Staged reading of the new play Witch Cake, a witch trial from the perspective of the accused, on Halloween night.
Theatrical Outfit is hosting a staged reading of Witch Cake on Saturday, October 31, from 7:30 PM to 9 PM. It's a new play by Melissa Simmons, and the date is no coincidence—it's Halloween night, and the story is built around a witch trial.
Most accounts of witch trials focus on the accusers or the judges, but Witch Cake tells the story from the eyes of the accused. It's set in the neocolonial dystopia of New Kempstead, and it follows three women fighting for survival as they're pulled into an oppressive system designed to identify, punish, and eliminate them. Simmons describes it as a story of gender, power, belief, and ritual, and it asks a question that stays with you: how do you survive a system built to destroy you?
Because it's a staged reading, you're getting a look at the play in its early stages. The text is the center of the evening, and you'll hear it read aloud rather than seeing a fully blocked and costumed production. It's a good way to experience a new work while it's still being developed, and doing it on Halloween adds a layer of atmosphere that fits the subject matter. The reading is directed by Joey Davila.
