A contemporary dance spectacle mixing hip hop and Tchaikovsky's music, directed by Jennifer Weber, with MC Kurtis Blow opening the show.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to the Fox Theatre on Saturday, December 26, for a full evening that puts Tchaikovsky's holiday classic through a hip hop filter. It's a remixed and reimagined version of the original score, with hip hop dance taking the place of the traditional ballet. The show is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, a Tony and Olivier Award nominee.
On stage, the production runs with a cast of about a dozen all-star dancers, supported by a DJ and a violinist. The whole thing is fronted by MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop's founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set of his own before the main performance gets underway. Between the dancers, the DJ, the violinist, and Blow, the stage stays pretty full throughout the night.
It's billed as a holiday mash-up for the whole family, so it works as a way to bring the kids along without needing to know anything about the original ballet. The music stays recognizable as Tchaikovsky, but the movement is all hip hop, and the two run side by side rather than one replacing the other. It's a full evening at the Fox, not a short matinee, and the Marquee Club is open for those who want to hang out before the show starts.
