Photography exhibition by Charlotte Woolf that moves beyond the 'male gaze' to examine the colonial, cis, Western and medical gaze, part of the Atlanta Photography Group's 'Eyes on Atlanta' series.
Subverting the Gaze runs from October 13 to November 6 at the APG Gallery at Ansley Mall, 1544 Piedmont Ave NE, #107, in Atlanta. It's part of the Atlanta Photography Group's Eyes on Atlanta series, a program of exhibitions juried throughout the year by well-known photography curators, gallery owners, and experts.
Charlotte Woolf curated the show, and the title points exactly to what she's after. She takes the idea of the 'gaze' beyond Laura Mulvey's 1970s 'male gaze,' drawing instead on bell hooks' 'oppositional gaze' and bringing in the white, colonial, cis, Western, and medical gazes. It's a look at who's doing the watching and what they're bringing to it.
Woolf is a queer artist and educator—an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Georgia State University Perimeter College and a Faculty Curator—whose own practice is rooted in photography and gender studies. She explores how infrastructure shapes society, from buildings and bodies to labor and food. Her recent series Expanding Agriculture highlights sustainable farming and food justice through collaborations with women and LGBTQIA+ growers.
