One-day intensive masterclass for emerging artistic directors and producers on how to plan a theatre season, from artistic vision and programming to budgeting and audience connection.
Actor's Express Theatre Company is hosting a one-day masterclass on season planning this Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM to 3 PM, with an hour for lunch. It's a deep dive into how a theatre season actually gets put together, from the first artistic vision to the final budget and how it all connects back to the audience.
The day is built around the complete process: defining an artistic vision, building a balanced program, and working through the constraints of budgeting and other practical limits. You'll go through how to evaluate scripts strategically and how to balance accessibility with riskβthe classic tension between picking a crowd-pleaser and taking a chance on something new. It also covers the casting and creative processes that follow once the plays are set.
Rather than just talking in the abstract, the class uses real case studies and industry stories from seasons that worked and ones that didn't. It's designed for emerging artistic directors, producers, and board members, but it's open to anyone interested in how a theatre's future is shaped. If you've ever wondered why certain plays end up on a bill and others don't, this is where that decision-making gets broken down.
