World premiere comedy by Jayne Deely about a nosy family friend who launches a GoFundMe for a trans couple, thrusting them into small-town gossip.
Actor's Express Theatre Company is hosting the world premiere of I Never Asked for a GoFundMe on Friday, October 23, at 7:30 PM. It's a comedy written by Jayne Deely and directed by Rebecca S. Wear, and since it's a world premiere, this is the first time the play is being staged.
The story follows Millie and her partner Avery, who head back to Millie's hometown of Mobile, Alabama, while Avery recovers from gender-affirming top surgery. Things go sideways when a nosy, evangelical family friend mistakes the surgery for breast cancer and launches a GoFundMe for the couple. That one misunderstanding throws them right into the middle of small-town gossip and a flood of donations they never asked for. From there, the play turns into a comedy about what happens when your private life becomes public business in a town where everyone's watching.
As the money keeps rolling in, Millie and Avery have to decide whether to keep it or give it back, and in doing so, they have to figure out if being unapologetically themselves comes with a price tag. It's the kind of setup that works on two levels: the immediate, awkward comedy of a misplaced fundraiser, and the larger question of how much of yourself you're willing to trade for the world's approval.
