A legal panel session examining Georgia's new medical cannabis law, the Putting Patients First Act, with expert panelists discussing statutory changes and practical implications.
Georgia State University College of Law is hosting Getting into the Weeds: A Georgia Medical Cannabis Law Update on Friday, October 16, from noon to 4:30 PM. It's a deep dive into how the state's medical cannabis laws have changed over the last few months, and it's being held at the Knowles Conference Center, 85 Park Place NE in Atlanta.
To get why this is happening, you have to look at two big shifts that hit in April 2026. First, the U.S. Department of Justice reclassified state-licensed medical cannabis products from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act. Second, the Georgia General Assembly passed the Putting Patients First Act (SB 220), which took the state's old low-THC framework and turned it into a full-fledged medical cannabis program. Between those two things, the legal ground shifted under everyone's feet.
A panel of experts will walk through the statutory changes and what they actually mean for the people involved. They'll cover physician participation and the practical side of how patients get access, and then they'll move into the broader implications: health equity, pain management outcomes, and the ripple effects the law has on employment, family, and criminal law. It's a wide-reaching conversation, so it'll touch on a few different areas of the law at once.
