Exhibitions on view at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, including 'Realism Revisited', which runs through February 2027.
Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is currently showing three exhibitions on its historic campus in Atlanta: Realism Revisited, Conversations with Collections, and The Core Self. The museum describes itself as the only small liberal arts university museum in the Southeast that regularly hosts nationally and internationally recognized exhibitions, and it maintains a stated commitment to diversity, equity, and accessibility.
Realism Revisited is the anchor of the current lineup, pulling paintings and works on paper from the museum's permanent collection. It covers a wide stretch of the tradition—European Realism, American Realism, Hyper Realism, and Social Realism—and echoes two landmark shows from founding director Lloyd Nick: The Spirit and the Flesh: Contemporary American Realists (1995) and Slow Painting: A Deliberate Renaissance (2007). The exhibition runs through February 28, 2027, so there's plenty of time to catch it.
That focus on the permanent collection isn't a coincidence. Director Elizabeth Peterson Jennings says a new museum studies minor is pushing the museum to lean more on its own holdings to shape the student experience and to highlight living, regional artists. The museum's programming draws from its own collection as well as partnerships with institutions like the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, Sapar Contemporary, and the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
