Current exhibitions at the Center for Puppetry Arts, including the Jim Henson Collection and 'Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation'.
The Center for Puppetry Arts in Midtown has its exhibitions on display through the end of the month, and if you've never been, it's a good time to get inside. The center is a theater, museum, and education center all in one, and the exhibitions are just one part of what's going on there. You can see the permanent collections on guided tours, and they run puppetry classes alongside the exhibition program.
Right now, there are three collections to walk through. The Jim Henson Collection is the big one most people come for, and it sits alongside the Global Collection, which looks at puppetry from around the world. Then there's Frame by Frame: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation, which shifts the focus to the painstaking process of animating frame by frame. Between the three, you get a pretty wide view of the craft—from the household names to the global traditions and the technical side of how it's actually made.
It's worth knowing that the center does more than just museum work. It's a working theater that stages puppet plays for mature audiences and kid-lit adaptations for all ages. They also host the Puckin' Fuppet Show, which they bill as Atlanta's only adult open-mic puppet slam, complete with an Audience Choice cash prize. So while the exhibitions are the quiet part, there's a lot of live performance happening around them.
