DJ Shadow, the godfather of instrumental hip-hop, celebrates the 30th anniversary of his seminal album 'Endtroducing.....' at The Eastern.
DJ Shadow plays The Eastern on Saturday, October 24, celebrating 30 years of Endtroducing. The set is built around that record, which came out in late 1996 to huge critical acclaim and earned a spot in the Guinness World Records in 2001 as the first completely sampled album. If you've never heard it, the whole thing was constructed from samples—no live instruments, just a massive collection of records chopped and rearranged into something new.
Shadow is the stage name of Josh Davis, who's widely called the godfather of instrumental hip-hop. Endtroducing put him on the map, and he's spent the decades since working in a few different directions. He spent time as a shadow producer on Rage Against the Machine's Evil Empire, where he helped shape the solo on "Bulls On Parade," and put out The Outsider in 2006. He also teamed up with Cut Chemist for the live show The Hard Sell, which toured in 2007 and 2008, and formed the Shadow Percussion Project to adapt Endtroducing for the stage.
His later solo albums—The Less You Know, the Better, The Mountain Will Fall, and Our Pathetic Age—brought in rap collaborations with Run the Jewels, Nas, and De La Soul. His most recent record, Action Adventure, came out in 2024 as his seventh solo LP. It's almost entirely instrumental, made alone during lockdown and inspired by 1980s radio mix tapes he found on eBay. This show brings things back to the album that started it all.
