Exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by Atlanta artist Corrine Colarusso, inspired by the Okefenokee Swamp and her backyard.
Corrine Colarusso brings her exhibition Runaway Universe to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA) on Thursday, October 29. It's a gathering of recent paintings and works on paper by the Atlanta-based artist, who was born in Boston. The work draws on the landscape of the Okefenokee Swamp and her own backyard to map the cycles of day and season as parallel worlds linked to our inner selves.
Colarusso has a deep history with the city. She moved to Atlanta in 1975 to teach at the Atlanta College of Art—now SCAD—where she earned tenure in 1982, served as head of the Painting department, and created the visiting artist program. Before that, she studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, was a Fellow at Yale Norfolk's Summer School of Art and Music, and earned her MFA at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
Her career has taken her well beyond Georgia. She's a Guggenheim Fellow and received a Fulbright-Hayes grant to India and Nepal, and has held residencies at the American Academy in Rome, MacDowell, and the Ossabaw Island Project. Her work has been showing for 50 years and is held in collections like the High Museum of Art and the Nasher Museum at Duke University.
