Rental play at 7 Stages Theatre honouring the life and legacy of civil rights activist Jane Wilburn Sapp.
7 Stages Theatre is hosting Celebrating Jane Sapp on Sunday, October 25, from 5 to 7 PM. The evening is titled Singing Up Courage and Community, and it's a tribute to Jane Wilburn Sapp, a community elder and national treasure whose life and legacy the Trump Administration has targeted for erasure.
Sapp has spent more than five decades as a central leader in cultural work and grassroots organizing, and throughout that time she's kept the role of arts and culture at the center of struggles for social justice. Her work has reached deep into Southern communities—Birmingham, Selma and Greene County in Alabama, Little Rock, New Orleans and Biloxi—and then up into the Northeast, where she launched and guided cultural programs and taught at community organizing hubs like the Highlander Research and Education Centre, the Penn Community Centre on St Helena's Island in South Carolina and the Southern Partners Fund.
If you've spent any time in the city's organizing or arts circles, you know that kind of reach doesn't happen by accident. It's the result of fifty years of showing up in places that don't always get the spotlight. This evening is about recognizing that work and the people she's inspired along the way.
