Twentieth anniversary of the Halloween tradition in which costumed storytellers guide visitors through the historic cemetery after dark, appropriate for children.
Capturing the Spirit of Oakland is back at Historic Oakland Cemetery this October, marking its 20th year. It's one of Atlanta's most beloved autumn traditions and one of the city's most iconic Halloween events, where history, theatre, and the thrill of the season converge. The tours run October 15-18 and October 22-25, 2026.
As the sun sets, you'll explore the cemetery after dark, following costumed storytellers who bring to life some of the fascinating characters who shaped Atlanta. The tour is theatrical and guided, designed to enlighten rather than frighten, and it's considered appropriate for children. It runs about 75 minutes and covers roughly a mile. This year's edition includes Halloween theatrics and a special guest appearance by the Pink Pig.
All proceeds support the Historic Oakland Foundation's mission to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Historic Oakland Cemetery. It's an outdoor museum of Atlanta's history with more than 70,000 residents interred there, alongside Victorian gardens, art, and architecture. Tickets are sold in 15-minute blocks, which determine when you enter the cemetery rather than the tour time itself. They're non-refundable and non-exchangeable, rain or shine.
