A live stand-up comedy show paired with a tasting of wine varietals, performed by local comedian Merrick Watts.
An Idiot's Guide to Wine comes to Upstairs Atlanta on Friday, October 23, with a second date on Saturday, November 28. Both shows start at 6 PM. It's a stand-up comedy set paired with a tasting of six wine varietals, and the whole thing runs about 70 minutes.
The show was written by Australian comedian Merrick Watts, who bills himself as the only comedian in the world to hold a WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) level 3 qualification. That's a serious credential for someone who makes a living from jokes, and it's the foundation the whole night is built on. The format is produced by Fever under license from Grapes of Mirth Pty Ltd, and it's been touring for 35 seasons.
Across the hour, Watts shares tips on pairing wine with food and occasion, with the goal of boosting the audience's wine IQ and cutting through the snobbery that often surrounds the subject. You don't need any prior wine knowledge to get it; the experience is meant for all levels, from people who can't tell a Chardonnay from a Cabernet to those who already know their way around a cellar. The tasting is curated to run alongside the comedy, so you're sipping through the varietals as the set unfolds.
