World premiere of the comedy i never asked for a gofundme at Actor's Express Theatre Company, exploring small-town gossip and gender identity.
Actor's Express Theatre Company is hosting the world premiere of i never asked for a gofundme on Wednesday, October 21, at 7:30 PM. It's a new comedy by Jayne Deely, directed by Rebecca S. Wear, and it's set in the American South.
The story follows Millie, a Southern PhD student who returns to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama, with her partner Avery, an AFAB trans-masc/nonbinary person recovering from gender-affirming top surgery. Things go sideways when a nosy, evangelical family friend mistakes the surgery for breast cancer and launches a GoFundMe for the couple. That one mistake throws them right into the center of small-town gossip and a flood of donations they never asked for, and leaves them to figure out if being unapologetically themselves comes with a price tag.
Rounding out the production is The Coven, a genderqueer guardian angel and Greek chorus who doubles as a queer ancestor and plays several roles—including Gay Jesus and Marjorie Taylor Greene. The whole thing is a world premiere, so this is the first time it's hitting a stage.
