Screening of the 1925 silent horror classic with a new live score by Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman.
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) is being screened at Cowdray Hall in the Aberdeen Art Gallery on Thursday 5 November, from 7:30pm to 9pm. It's the silent horror classic, and this time it comes with a new live score by Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman.
Rupert Julian directed the film, which stars Lon Chaney and was the first screen adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel. It's one of the great horror films of the silent era, remembered for its opulent costumes, extravagant sets, hundreds of extras and its early use of Technicolour. Wasylyk and Perman have written a haunting and dramatic new score for it, so you'll be hearing the film with a fresh soundtrack rather than a recording.
The two composers aren't strangers to each other. They released their first collaboration, Ash Grey and the Gull Glides On, in 2024, which earned critical acclaim and a Scottish Album Of The Year Award nomination. This score is their next project together, and the screening is hosted in partnership with Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.

If you want to take the music home, copies of the soundtrack album House With A Curse will be available on the night. It came out on 16 October 2026 on Clay Pipe Music, so it'll be fresh off the press. The screening runs from 7:30pm to 9pm at Cowdray Hall, inside the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
