Talk by psychiatrist Dr Wahba on the science of magic mushrooms and their potential to treat depression and other mental health conditions, followed by a Q&A.
Dr Wahba is coming to The Lemon Tree on Tuesday 20 October for a talk on the science of magic mushrooms. It's part of the Seed Talks series, and the whole evening is built around one topic: how psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, is being looked at as a way to treat depression, addiction and other mental health conditions.
Wahba doesn't just dive into the clinical side, though. He frames the current research against the way indigenous communities have used these mushrooms for generations, for divination and healing, so the talk connects the modern medical approach with a much older tradition. The session is followed by a Q&A, which is where you can actually get your questions answered rather than just listening.
Wahba is a consultant psychiatrist with more than a decade of experience, and he leads the mood disorder research clinic in Newcastle, where his work focuses on psychedelic therapy. Having someone who runs a clinic on this stuff is a good place to start if you're curious about how it actually works in practice, rather than just hearing about it in the abstract.
