A concert by the Aberdeen string quartet Nova Quartet of Oscar-winning movie scores, including The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and West Side Story.
Nova Quartet are playing Oscar-winning movie scores at Cowdray Hall on Friday 6 November, from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. It's part of the Classics @ the Cowdray series at Aberdeen Art Gallery, so it's a proper evening of music in the heart of the city.
The programme pulls from some of the most recognisable scores in cinema. You'll hear The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, West Side Story and The Sound of Music β all Oscar winners, and all pieces that work as well on a string quartet as they do with a full orchestra. It's a selection that spans decades of film music, from the early classics to the Disney era, so there's a bit of everything in there.
Nova Quartet are an Aberdeen-based string quartet, and the four of them have played at many of Europe's most beautiful concert venues, spending years perfecting their technical sound and unique style. They were professionally trained at prestigious European conservatoires, and before coming together as a quartet, they each played in various orchestras. That background in orchestral playing comes through in how they handle this kind of material, which was originally written for much larger ensembles.
