Hands-on clay workshop led by AJ Simpson to handbuild playful blobs and creatures using pinch potting, coiling and simple sculpting.
AJ Simpson is running a series of clay workshops at the Bon Accord Centre this October, where you'll spend a morning handbuilding your own playful blobs and creatures. It's part of the Tattie Holiday Art Club collection presented by EDIT x SMART Art Agency, and Simpson himself is a Pottery Throwdown winner, so you're in safe hands whether you've never touched clay before or you've got a few things under your belt.
The sessions run for five and a half hours, and you'll be working through some of the basics of handbuilding: pinch potting, coiling, and simple sculpting. You'll get hands-on guidance throughout, and there are artist references on hand to help you figure out your designs, so you're not just staring at a lump of clay wondering what it's supposed to be. All the materials are provided, so you just need to turn up. If you're bringing anyone under 14, they'll need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
There's a bit more to it than just making something for your shelf, too. By taking part, you're supporting the work of Charlie's House and the local creative community, so the morning does a bit of good beyond the clay. It's a long session, so you've got plenty of time to really get stuck in and work your creature into shape rather than rushing it.
