Zog is at the Grand Opera House on Tuesday 14 July, with a second performance on Wednesday 15 July. It's a stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's children's book, brought to the stage by Freckle Productions.
The story follows Zog, the keenest but most accident-prone dragon in Madam Dragon's school. He's the one who's always a bit off-target, and he spends much of the play trying to prove himself and earn a coveted golden star. Along the way, he's guided by a selfless young girl who helps him find his feet. It's a gentle, family-friendly tale about persistence and kindness, and if you've read the book, you'll recognise the characters and the world it builds.
On stage, the production adds a few things the book can't. Joe Stilgoe has written joyful songs that run through the show, and Little Angel provides the puppets that bring the dragons to life. It's the same team behind Stick Man and Zog and the Flying Doctors, so it sits in the same family of adaptations of Donaldson and Scheffler's work.
