York's largest car boot fair where sellers can turn unwanted items into cash; admission is free for buyers.
York Racecourse hosts its car boot sale this Saturday 15 August, and it's one of the bigger ones around the city. It's run by K & J Brown Promotions, who also put on antique fairs at the racecourse and have put together a Beginners Guide to Car Booting for anyone who's never done it before. They frame the whole thing as a chance to turn unwanted or unused items into cash, and the site points to reviews of the event in the Daily Express and in Stephen Wells' Source Vintage.
If you're planning to sell, you'll want to get there early: sellers are advised to arrive between 7:00am and 7:30am, and the sale closes at 1:00pm, with everyone expected off the site by 2:00pm. It's a good run of a morning, and the racecourse is a big enough space that there's plenty of room to spread out. For buyers, admission is free, and there are refreshments and toilets on site, so you can spend as long as you like poking through the stalls without having to head home for a brew.

It's not a one-off, either. The sale runs every Saturday from 28 March to 31 October 2026, except on racing Saturdays: 23 May, 13 and 27 June, 11 and 25 July, 22 August and 10 October. If you're thinking of selling, cars are £15, vans start from £18, and trailers from £3. You'll find it at York Racecourse, Knavesmire Road, York YO23 1EX, and parking is free after 8:00am.
