A summer series of free public demonstrations showcasing traditional heritage craft skills as part of the York Conservation Trust's 50th anniversary programme.
York Conservation Trust is running a series of free heritage craft demonstrations at St Anthony's Gardens, from 24 July to 14 August. It's a summer programme of traditional skills shown out in the open, and because it's a series rather than a one-off, you can drop in whenever suits you across those three weeks.
The demonstrations are part of the Trust's 50th anniversary programme. The whole thing is about the craft that goes into looking after the city's historic buildings, and the Trust's chief executive, Guy Bowyer, has put it plainly: heritage skills are essential to the future of York's built heritage. The series is a chance to meet the craftspeople who actually do that work and to see traditional techniques in action, rather than just reading about them in a guide.
It's a low-pressure way to spend an afternoon in the city. You can watch a particular skill being worked through, ask questions, and get a proper sense of how these old buildings are kept standing. If you're into the making side of things, it's a good look at the practical side of conservation.
