A ten-day exhibition of the twelve 'Watchers of York' grotesque sculptures in the historic Chapter House of York Minster, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts.
The Watchers of York are gathering in the Chapter House at York Minster from 3rd to 13th September, their first time all together in one room. It's a ten-day window to see all twelve of the grotesque sculptures in one go, set against the Minster's stained glass.
If you've spent the summer spotting them around the city, you'll know the story. The Watchers are a collection of twelve protective characters inspired by the carved grotesques high up on the Minster, including a medieval wyvern that dates back to around 1400. Each one was crafted from fibreglass for durability and designed by a different UK artist, with each sculpture reflecting the personality and guardianship of the specific spot where it stood during the city-wide trail. That trail ran from 29th June to 31st August, so the Watchers have been scattered across York for the last few months. This is the first time they're all in the same place.
It's also the last time you'll see them together. After the ten days in the Chapter House, the sculptures will be auctioned off. The money goes to two causes: the conservation of York Minster, specifically the restoration of the Rose Window, and the York Creates Fund, which supports local cultural and creative activity. So, if you've had your eye on a particular one since the trail started, this is the chance to see it up close before it goes under the hammer.
