u3a York Open Day

u3a York are holding their open day at Central Methodist Hall, St Saviourgate, on Thursday 8 October, from 10:00 to 13:00. It's aimed at retired and semi-retired people across the city who are looking for something new to get stuck into.

If you haven't come across them before, u3a York is part of a national and international movement that helps retired and semi-retired people stay active, learn and develop in whatever way suits them. They run around 140 different groups, hobbies and social activities, and the range is wide enough to cover almost any interest. There's current affairs, gardening, jive dancing and classical guitar, alongside various talks and social events. It's less of a fixed club and more of a collection of things to do, so you can pick and choose what actually appeals to you.

Chair Karen Sawyer describes the open day as an informal chance to hear about those talks and social events and to meet the group leaders in person. It's also a day when members can suggest and run new groups themselves, so if there's something you've always wanted to start but haven't found a group for, this is the time to bring it up. There will be taster sessions from various groups running throughout the morning, with refreshments on offer while you wander around. Because places for those sessions are limited, you're asked to request a specific one from the Groups Coordinator rather than just turning up and hoping for the best.

So, if you've got some time on your hands and are fancying a new hobby or just a few more people to see, it's a good way to see what's on the go. The open day runs from 10:00 to 13:00 at Central Methodist Hall, St Saviourgate, on Thursday 8 October.
