Trainspotting The Musical

Trainspotting The Musical is coming to the Grand Opera House in York from 9 to 14 November 2026. It's a stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel, set in the heroin scene of 1980s Edinburgh. The story follows Mark Renton and his mates, a group of young men caught up in drug use, until Renton decides he's had enough and wants to change his life.

For those who know the story from the screen, this production arrives three decades after the 1996 film directed by Danny Boyle, which won a BAFTA and was named one of the 100 best British films of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. The musical version premiered in London's West End and is now touring the UK, with a live band on stage accompanying the cast. Robbie Scott, a Scottish actor, takes on the role of Renton, played originally by Ewan McGregor in the film.

Scott is joined by Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, and Frankie O'Connor as Begbie. The rest of the cast includes Finlay Paul as Tommy, Rebecca McKinnis as Cathy Renton, Gordon Cooper as Davie Renton, Ashley R Russell as Colleen, Rosie Dignan as Alison, Yana Harris as Kelly, and Sophie Hutchinson as Lizzie. It's a fairly large ensemble for a story that spends so much of its time inside a small, tight-knit circle of friends.
