A new comedy by Godber following two backstage workers who decide to stage their own dramatic adventure to save their crumbling local theatre.
This Is The Life runs at York Theatre Royal from Wednesday 27 January to Saturday 30 January 2027, playing in the Main House. It's a new comedy by Godber, and the story centres on Dave and Sapphire, two people who've spent years working backstage at the Old Forge. They're the sort who've always preferred the dark of the wings to the spotlight, and they're shocked and angry to find out that their beloved, crumbling local theatre is closing.
With audience numbers dwindling, the stand-up acts failing to land, and the staff in a state of chaos, they decide to take matters into their own hands and stage their own dramatic adventure. They build it from the characters they've met and the scenes they've witnessed over the years, effectively turning the theatre's own history into the show. The play works its way through themes of hope, ghosts, and the power of performance as the two of them finally step centre stage, questioning whether this might bring the punters back or simply hasten the venue's conversion into luxury flats.
