The Shepherds (York Mystery Plays)

The Shepherds comes to the streets of York on Sunday 5 July, one of the plays in this year's York Mystery Plays cycle. It's performed on pageant wagons that move through the city, so the show doesn't stay in one place—it travels, stopping at four different locations across York throughout the day.

That's how the whole cycle works: ten plays in total, each on its own wagon, rolling from one spot to the next. The Shepherds is one of them, and it's directed by Pip Cook, with actors from Papermouse Theatre. Joy Cullwick, a master at the Company of Cordwainers, is also part of the cast. It's an outdoor production, played out in the open air on the street, and it's aimed at families and all ages, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults.

If you're planning to catch it, there are two ways to watch. You can stand for free on the street at any of the four stops—the Minster Refectory Gardens on Deansgate, King's Square, and St Sampson's Square are among them—or you can book a paid seat at Dean's Park. The free views are just from the pavement, so if you've got little ones with you or just prefer to sit down, the paid seating is the way to go. Either way, it's a street show, so keep that in mind when you're deciding where to stand.
