The Rocky Horror Show is back at the Grand Opera House York from 20 to 25 July, Richard O'Brien's rock 'n' roll musical returning to the city for a short run. It's directed by Christopher Luscombe.
If you're not familiar with the story, it follows two squeaky-clean college kids, Brad and his fiancée Janet, whose car breaks down outside a creepy mansion on their way to visit their former college professor. That wrong turn leads them straight to the charismatic Dr Frank'n'Furter, and from there it's an adventure full of fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity. The music is a big part of it, with the timeless classics Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and the pelvic-thrusting showstopper The Time Warp all in the mix. It's a show that's been seen by over 35 million theatregoers, so it's well-trodden ground, but it still works as a piece of theatre.
The Grand Opera House is a proper York institution, and it's been bringing West End theatre, first-class comedy, variety and musicals from across the UK to the city since 1902. Over the years it's hosted some huge names: Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Charlie Chaplin, Morecombe & Wise and Laurel & Hardy have all played its stage. This production is just the latest to pass through.
