The Basement Comedy Club

The Basement Comedy Club returns to The Basement at City Screen York Picturehouse on Sunday 19 July, the third Sunday of the month. It's a monthly night of fresh comedy, and this one brings together four names from different ends of the circuit.

Lauren Pattison leads the bill. She was an Edinburgh Best Newcomer nominee in 2017 and an Edinburgh Best Show nominee in 2022, and she hosts the podcast Conversations Against Living Miserably. Aaron Simmonds joins her, a comedian whose work is grounded in his disability and who has appeared on QI, Stand Up Sketch Show, and The Russell Howard Hour. Nicola Mantalios takes the third spot, the winner of the 2025 Funny Women competition and a So You Think You’re Funny finalist. Aaron Wood holds the night together as MC, a rising comic with three sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and a debut stand-up special, This Can’t Be It.

If you haven't been before, it's worth knowing where this actually happens. The Basement is a 100-capacity events space tucked below the City Screen York Picturehouse, which sits within the wider City Screen York complex — a riverside cinema and café-bar in the old Yorkshire Herald Print works. The Basement itself is a licensed venue, so it handles live music, comedy, spoken word and theatre throughout the year.

It's a monthly club, so if you miss this one, the next will be the third Sunday of August. The line-up for 19 July is Lauren Pattison, Aaron Simmonds, Nicola Mantalios, and Aaron Wood on MC.
