Energetic Taiko drumming performance by Kaminari UK with a give-it-a-go session; free and suitable for all ages.
Kaminari UK are bringing Taiko drumming to York Museum Gardens on Sunday 30 August, with performances running from 11:00 to 11:30am and again from 3:00 to 3:30pm. The group is York-based, so this is a local ensemble playing in their own city. The drumming is outdoors, directly behind York Art Gallery on Museum Street (YO1 7FR), so it's easy to find if you're already in the centre.
Taiko started in Japan as an energetic, dynamic form of drumming that combines rhythm and movement, and Kaminari UK draw on both traditional and contemporary pieces. The day is built around watching and then trying it yourself: between the two performances, there's an interactive 'give it a go' session from 1:30 to 2:00pm where you can learn the basics of Taiko drumming and a short piece. It's a good way to see how it works up close before the afternoon set.

The drumming is part of Making Waves: A Closing Celebration, a festival running across Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, and it's suitable for all ages, so it works as a family thing on a Sunday morning or afternoon. Entry is free, and the whole day is outdoors in the gardens.
