Sun Ring Making

Seiko Kinoshita is running a sun ring making workshop at York Art Gallery on Saturday 29 August, and it's one of those easy, open-ended things you can just drift into on a weekend. The whole day runs from 10:30am to 4:30pm, so you're not tied to a specific slot — you can turn up whenever suits you and spend as much or as little time as you like on it.

The idea is simple: you'll be making your own colourful woven sun wheel to take home. It's a family-friendly session, and you don't need any prior experience to get stuck in, so it works as well for someone who's never touched a piece of craft in their life as it does for someone who's always got something on the go. It's suitable for all ages, too, so it's a decent one to bring the kids along to if you're looking for something to do with them that doesn't involve a screen.

One of the best bits is that you don't actually need to go inside the gallery to take part. The workshop is held outdoors in the Artists' Garden, tucked behind York Art Gallery in the York Museum Gardens (Museum Street, York YO1 7FR), so you can just wander over and join in without needing a ticket for the exhibitions. It is weather permitting, though, so keep an eye on the forecast before you set off — if the rain comes down, it's the kind of thing that'll be called off.

It's free to take part, and since it runs across the whole day, you can fit it in around your other plans rather than building your day around it. Just head to the Artists' Garden behind the gallery on Saturday 29 August, between 10:30am and 4:30pm.
