Sound & Story Workshop

Sound & Story is a workshop at the York Theatre Royal on Tuesday 14 July, starting at 16:30 in the Upper Foyer. It's run by Samuel and Damien, and the whole thing is about how music is made for film and storytelling.

If you've never touched an instrument in your life, you're still in. The session is built around the idea that you can compose without needing any formal musical language or experience. You'll work with Samuel and Damien to turn ideas into music and get a feel for how different instruments actually work. The starting point is Ancient Greek history, and they're asking you to bring along anything that reminds you of it — poems, books, pictures, whatever sparks something for you — to use as inspiration for what you make.

The workshop is part of a series of creative events organised by Futureproof throughout 2026, aimed at 18-35 year olds in York who want to explore theatre for the first time. The Futureproof team is a group of people from different creative backgrounds brought together by the York Theatre Royal to look at how people connect to theatre and what that means for its future. This session is one of the ways they're opening the doors to people who might not usually find themselves in a theatre.
