Slow Surfacing is on at Heslington Hall Art Gallery from 19 June to 31 October 2026, an exhibition celebrating the international career of local painter and printmaker John Langton. It's a long run, so you've got plenty of time to fit it in over the summer and well into the autumn.
Langton is one of the local names in the University of York's art collection, which holds over 900 works across many media. The collection has a particular strength in modern British art from the 1960s to the 1980s, and Langton sits alongside other local artists like Austin Wright, Russell Platt, David Lloyd-Jones and Sally Arnup. The bigger names in the mix include Barbara Hepworth, Sidney Nolan, Paul Nash, Joan Eardley, Keith Vaughan, Jacob Epstein, Mary Fedden, John Hoyland, Patrick Caulfield and Elizabeth Blackadder.
Beyond the collection, the campus has fifteen outdoor sculptures and two permanent galleries that stage temporary shows: the Norman Rea Art Gallery in Derwent College and the Roslyn Lyons Art Gallery in the Music Research Centre. The university also runs research-related art projects, like the 'Art of Politics' trail, which comes out of academic-artistic collaborations. Slow Surfacing is part of that wider scene, bringing Langton's work into the spotlight.
