Sancho and Sterne: A Meeting of Minds in Georgian Britain comes to York Mansion House on Monday 10 August, from 3:30pm to 4:45pm. It's the launch of a new student-led critical edition of the correspondence between Ignatius Sancho and Laurence Sterne, produced by students at York St John University. The afternoon consists of short talks and reflections on the editorial process behind the project, so you'll get a look at how the students actually put the edition together.
The letters themselves bring together two of the eighteenth century's most distinctive voices. Ignatius Sancho was a writer, composer, and one of the first Black Britons known to have voted in a parliamentary election; Laurence Sterne wrote Tristram Shandy. Their exchange touches on empathy, slavery, and moral responsibility in Georgian Britain, and the talks will draw on those themes.

The event is part of the York Georgian Festival, the Mansion House's fourth annual celebration of 18th-century life in York. The venue is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York, which has been at the heart of city society since 1732. The session runs from 3:30pm to 4:45pm on Monday 10 August.
