A pun-filled pantomime by The Deadpan Players reimagining the classic Rapunzel fairytale, with music, laughs and outrageous hairstyles.
The Deadpan Players are bringing a brand new pantomime to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre this January, and as the title Princess Rapunzel: The Heir with the Hair suggests, it's going to be a pun-heavy take on the fairytale. It runs over two days, Friday 22 and Saturday 23 January 2027, with three shows in total.
The story is the one you know, just dressed up for the stage. Prince Garnier, Betty Bouffant and Fairy Dandruff set out to rescue Princess Rapunzel from the clutches of the evil Mother Gothel and restore her to her rightful place as heir to the throne of Sassoon, and they've got to do it in time for her eighteenth birthday. The whole thing leans into the hair theme, with a cast of colourful characters, music and plenty of laughs along the way, and fittingly, some pretty outrageous hairstyles on display.
It's a new production from The Deadpan Players, so it's not a revival of something they've done before. The punning is right up front in the title, and the hair jokes run through the whole thing, from the name of the kingdom to the costumes. If you're in the mood for a panto that doesn't take itself too seriously, this is a good shout for a family outing or just a light-hearted night out with friends.
