Play In A Week – The Tempest (8-11s)

York Theatre Royal is running a Play In A Week workshop for 8 to 11-year-olds from 10 to 14 August, with the whole thing held in The Studio. It's exactly what the title says: a group of kids spends a week working through a play and then performs it. The play this time is The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

Over the course of those five days, the group will be exploring the magical world of the play, which is set on an enchanting island where nothing is as it seems and revenge is being plotted. It's a great place to play, discover and make friends, and it's aimed at kids who'd rather be doing something active than sitting around during the summer break. The workshop runs from 2pm to 5pm each day, and the performance is on Friday at 4.30pm, so it's a proper build-up from Monday to the final curtain.

There's a sliding scale for the fee, which is worth keeping in mind if you're deciding whether to sign up. The full fee is £110, but that drops to £70 for households with an income of £25,000 or less, and further to £35 for families in receipt of benefits. There are also free memberships available for those in need, so it's not something that has to be off the table just because of the cost.

It's a good one for the summer holidays if you've got a child in that 8-11 age bracket who'd enjoy a week of theatre. The workshop runs 10 to 14 August, 2-5pm each day, with the performance on Friday at 4.30pm in The Studio at York Theatre Royal.
