A week-long theatre workshop for children aged 5-7 exploring magical stories from Grimm's Fairy Tales through crafts, games, and performance.
York Theatre Royal is running a Play In A Week workshop for children aged 5 to 7 this August, and this time it's built around Grimm's Fairy Tales. It runs from Monday 10 to Friday 14 August, 10:00am to 12:30pm each morning, over in The Studio.
The week is built on four of the Grimms' stories: Rapunzel, Snow White, Hansel & Gretel, and The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage. They describe it as a 'madcap world' where the kids spend the week exploring these magical and mystical tales, and it's framed as a joyous week of adventure, crafts, games and performing. It's a space to play, discover and make friends, so it's as much about the making as it is about the end result.
That result comes on the final day: there's a performance on Friday at 12pm, so the whole week builds towards that. It's a good one for the younger end of the primary school age group, and since it's mid-morning, it fits into the summer holidays without taking up the whole day.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in York and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

On the money side, the full fee is £110, but there are several lower rates: £70 for households with an income of £25,000 or less, and £35 for families in receipt of benefits. There are also free memberships available for those in need, so it's worth checking those options if the full price is a stretch. It's held in The Studio at York Theatre Royal, 10:00am to 12:30pm, 10-14 August, with the performance on Friday at 12pm.
