A printmaking workshop focused on traditional Japanese Mokuhanga techniques, with a live demonstration and hands-on session for all ages.
Paddle in the Surf: Mokuhanga Printmaking is coming to York Museum Gardens on Sunday 30 August, from 10am to 4.30pm. It's an outdoor workshop run by printmakers Andy and Naomi, and it's all about Mokuhanga, a traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique. If you've never come across it, that's exactly what the session is for: you'll see it in action before you have a go yourself.
The morning kicks off with a live demonstration by Andy and Naomi, who'll show you how the process works. After that, they'll guide you through a short workshop where you'll make four printed designs of your own, all inspired by The Great Wave. You'll be working with rich Prussian blue ink and authentic materials, and you get to take home everything you print. It's open to all ages and abilities, so you don't need any printmaking experience to join in.

One thing to keep in mind is that the workshop runs outdoors in the Artists' Garden, directly behind York Art Gallery, so it's weather permitting. The sessions run every 25 minutes throughout the day, which means you can drop in when it suits you rather than committing to a single fixed slot. Tickets are £15 per person and are bought on the day, so there's no need to book in advance. Just a heads-up: the ticket covers the workshop itself and doesn't include general admission to York Art Gallery, so if you want to see the galleries too, you'll need to sort that separately.
