A performance of songs of mourning and remembrance in the Celtic tradition, staged exclusively for York Ghost Week.
Olivia Graham brings The Keening to Holy Trinity Goodramgate on Sunday 1 November, as part of York Ghost Week. It's a performance of songs of mourning and remembrance in the Celtic tradition, staged exclusively for the city's Ghost Week, so it's a one-off rather than a touring date.
Graham is a Celtic folk musician, and the set weaves traditional songs together with her own original music, with the tales and traditions of that particular night running through the whole thing. The venue is one of York's oldest churches — over 800 years old — and she plays by candlelight, so it's an evening that leans into the atmosphere of the building as much as the music itself. The church is usually cooler inside than out, and seating is allocated on arrival, so it's worth keeping a jumper handy.

In terms of where it fits into the city's listings, it's grouped under Music, Folk, Haunted York, and Adults-Only Halloween, which gives you a fair idea of the mood. The performance runs from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, roughly an hour in total. Tickets are £10 plus an Eventbrite booking fee, coming to £11.55.
