Mother Shipton: The Great Prophetess opens at The York Dungeon on 1 November, a new live theatre experience that puts you inside the hideout of one of the city's most notorious figures. It's part of the Haunted York experience, so it sits within the wider tour rather than standing as a separate ticket.
For those who don't know her, Mother Shipton was the 16th-century prophetess of Knaresborough. The legend goes she was born in a cave on a stormy night and spent her life branded a monster, a witch, and something to be feared. This show takes you back into her world, set in her shadowy hideout where flickering fires tell tales of the past and the line between prophecy and reality blurs. It's framed as live theatre in a world of superstition, fear, and fate, so it's more about the atmosphere and the storytelling than a straightforward play.
It's worth keeping in mind that this is part of the broader Haunted York experience, which has picked up a few awards lately. The Dungeon was named Large Tourist Attraction of the Year at the Visit York Tourism Awards in both 2024 and 2026, and it took home the 2026 Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award and the 2026 Best of York Award.
