A family-friendly puzzle trail where visitors help the ghostly headmaster John Pulleyn stop a mischievous Guy Fawkes causing havoc on the night before Bonfire Night.
Mischief Night runs at York Mansion House from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, a family-friendly puzzle trail that plays on the northern tradition of pranks and chaos on the night before Bonfire Night. The tradition itself might stretch back to the 'misrule days', when communities were given a bit of leeway to let off steam before things settled back down.
The trail reimagines Guy Fawkes as a mischievous York schoolboy who caused endless havoc for his masters long before he ever set his sights on a far more famous prize. You're invited to help the house's ghostly headmaster, John Pulleyn, keep the peace. If you manage to complete the puzzle book, you'll be entered to win a unique ghost designed by York Ghost Merchants, inspired by the red flocked wallpaper of the Drawing Room.
It's part of Haunted York and runs alongside the Drawing Room's annual Ghost Week Black Box Sale, so there's more to see around the house if you're in the mood for it. The venue itself is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York and has sat at the heart of the city's society since 1732, which gives the whole thing a proper sense of place.

It's open 10.30am to 5pm daily, with the last entry at 4pm. Adults are £7.00, concessions £5.50 for over 65s and students aged 16+ in full-time education, and children aged 5 and over £3.50, with under 5s free. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £18.00, and York residents get half price. You'll find it at St Helen's Square, YO1 9QL.
