Making Waves: A Closing Celebration

York Art Gallery is throwing a proper send-off for Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, with activities running across both days from 10am to 5pm. The exhibition has been curated by Dr Eleanor Jackson, the gallery's Curator of Fine Art, and it's spent its run bringing the art, techniques and cultural context of Japanese woodblock print to life. A good chunk of it centres on the British-born contemporary printmaker Rebecca Salter PRA, who trained in traditional Japanese woodblock methods in Japan and still works with Japanese masters. Throughout its run, the show has been supported by monthly gallery talks led by curators, academics and gallery specialists.

The closing celebration takes that material and opens it up. Visitors are invited to handle the collection and use a sensory toolkit, and the whole thing runs as a family festival of music, workshops, creative activities, food and drink across the gallery and out into York Museum Gardens. The line-up is a mixed bag: the Micklegate Choir performs Sound Waves, a programme exploring land, seascapes and choral pieces from Japan; printmakers Andy and Naomi give a live Mokuhanga printmaking demonstration; and the York-based group Kaminari UK brings the Taiko drumming. There's also The Art of Kokedama workshop from 11am to 12 noon, which costs £25 per person and needs booking in advance, and is suitable for ages 10 and up.

Most of the activities are included in general admission, unless stated otherwise, and entry to York Museum Gardens is free. Because the exhibition has been popular, pre-booking is encouraged. The gallery is at Exhibition Square, York North Yorkshire YO1 7EW, and the celebration runs 10am to 5pm on both Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August.
