A hands-on weaving session in the museum's craft room to celebrate the Bayeux Tapestry display at the British Museum.
Yorkshire Museum is running a weaving workshop over the weekend of Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, with the craft room open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm both days. It's a hands-on session where you can have a go at weaving yourself, and it's part of a wider programme the museum has put together to mark the display of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum, one of its partners.
If you're into the tapestry, there's more to it than just the weaving. The museum has a family-friendly storytelling session led by the storyteller Eden, and a curator-led tour called York in 1066: The Bishophill Hoard and York's connection to the Bayeux Tapestry. That one is fronted by an Associate Collections Curator and looks at the city's role in the Norman Conquest, and it gives you a chance to handle a genuine coin from the period from the museum's own collection.
Between the weaving, the storytelling, and the tour, it's a good weekend to get a proper look at how the Norman Conquest actually touched York, rather than just reading about it in a textbook. The weaving is the easy entry point if you just want to spend an hour or two making something.
