A demonstration and introduction to Jiu Jitsu, the unarmed self-defence martial art, suitable for all ages as part of the Making Waves festival.
Jui Jitszu is coming to York Art Gallery on Saturday 29 August, for a demonstration and introduction to Jiu Jitsu. It's the unarmed self-defence martial art the Samurai used to train for the battlefield, though this session gives it a modern twist. The whole thing runs through a range of techniques, starting with how to fall safely and moving on to defending against punches, grabs, weapons and grappling.
It's not a standalone thing, either. The performance is part of Making Waves: A Closing Celebration, a two-day festival of music, workshops, creative activities, food and drink. That festival marks the closing weekend of Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print, the exhibition that's been running at York Art Gallery and York Museum Gardens.

One of the best bits is that you don't need admission to the gallery to take part, so you can just drop in for the session without worrying about the rest of the exhibition. It's also suitable for all ages, so it works as a family thing if you've got kids in tow. The session starts at 2pm and it's free.
