A demonstration of Jiu Jitsu, the unarmed self-defence martial art, suitable for all ages, as part of the Making Waves festival.
Jui Jitszu are performing at York Art Gallery on Sunday 30 August, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. It's a demonstration of Jiu Jitsu, the unarmed self-defence martial art that Samurai armoured warriors used to train for the battlefield, given a modern twist. The session introduces the sport and runs through techniques ranging from falling safely to defending against punches, grabs and weapons, plus grappling, and it's suitable for all ages.
The performance is part of Making Waves: A Closing Celebration, a two-day festival of music, workshops, creative activities, food and drink marking the closing weekend of the exhibition Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print. The exhibition itself has been on display at the gallery, and this festival is the send-off for it.
One thing to keep in mind is the location: the demonstration takes place outdoors in the Artists' Garden, which is directly behind York Art Gallery in the Museum Gardens (Museum Street, York YO1 7FR). Because it's outside, it'll only go ahead weather permitting, so it's worth checking the forecast before you head out.
