A talk by Michael Adam Smith on John Flaxman's funerary monuments, part of the 'Turner, Wedgwood & Beyond: Inspired by Flaxman' exhibition.
Michael Adam Smith is giving a talk at York Art Gallery on Wednesday 7 October, from 12:00 to 12:30. It's part of Turner, Wedgwood & Beyond: Inspired by Flaxman, a major exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of the York-born designer and sculptor John Flaxman and his influence on art and design since the eighteenth century.
Flaxman's illustrations of Homer's Odyssey are shown alongside works with strong classical themes by J.M.W. Turner, William Blake, Angelica Kauffman and Josiah Wedgwood. Smith's talk focuses on the bulk of Flaxman's sculptural output: more than 200 extant funerary monuments installed in churches across Britain and overseas. They range from small memorial tablets commissioned by bereaved families to publicly funded monuments commemorating British military heroes.
Smith is a PhD student at the University of York whose research, John Flaxman: art, design and the intermedial body, contributed to the exhibition's curation. He'll be talking about the monuments from that perspective, so it's a good chance to hear from someone who's been working with the material from the inside.
