A hand-stitching workshop where attendees create a scroll or wall hanging using hexagonal patchwork techniques, suitable for all abilities.
Jo Yeates is running a Happy Hexies workshop at South Bank Studios on Saturday 10 October, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. It's a day spent working with hexagons, that classic patchwork shape, but with a contemporary twist. You'll be making either a scroll or a wall hanging, and you've a choice of fabrics: Jo provides a range to work from, but you're more than welcome to bring your own if they hold a particular meaning for you. It's all hand-stitching, so there's no machine to worry about.
Jo describes stitching hexagons as calming, relaxing, and a little addictive, and she runs her sessions as mindful and meditative, suitable for all abilities. If you've never picked up a needle, you're as welcome as someone who's been sewing for years. People who've come along before have praised her for being generous with advice, inspiration, and materials, so it's a good place to start if you're new to this.
Jo is a resident artist at South Bank Studios, a creative community on Bishy Road that's been running since 2018. There are 18 artists with studio spaces there, and together they run weekly art classes, a wide variety of creative workshops, and art holidays. They also hold regular exhibitions as part of York Open Studios in April and North Yorkshire Open Studios in June and November. This is just one of the things happening around the studios.
